Voice Short Codes finally go Cross Network

London - 5th May 2004

UK mobile phone users will now be able to call one five digit number to connect to voice services. As short codes can be enabled for SMS, and eventually MMS and Video, the eventual hope is to be able to associate one short code with a company or brand, which it can use for communication with end users across all mobile channels. The consensus is that building a brand around one particular short code will be simpler and more effective from a marketing perspective.

The first commercial services will be launched in the next few weeks by MX Telecom, which has spent the last nine months working with the mobile phone operators to secure the first batch of wholesale cross-network voice short codes. To date, a few voice short codes have been available. However, MX Telecom will be launching with the whole cross-section of companies.

Many in the industry believe that voice short codes will be one of the most significant developments in the mobile space. "This will be a huge market and one day it may surpass SMS when it comes to volumes," said Alex Moir, Marketing Director of MX Telecom.

Voice short codes (or voice codes for short) will initially only be available for mobile phones. However, uniting all of the mobile channels under the umbrella of one five digit short code has obvious potential, and is an exciting progression for the industry.
