PayForIT Marketing Opt-Ins and Custom Messages
Overview
The PayForIT scheme allows you to offer end users the chance to opt in to receive free marketing updates. The opt-ins are displayed on the gateway-hosted WAP page displayed after the end user has confirmed a one-off charge or subscription.
This page explains the options supported by the Charge To Account Gateway for post-confirmation marketing opt-ins and service delivery messages.

Post-confirmation options
The details of the post-confirmation page are controlled by the following parameters, which you specify in the original charge or subscription request (for a full guide to making requests, see the One-off Charges and Subscriptions documentation).
| Parameter | Value | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| postConfirmationPage | confirmation | The standard post-confirmation page is displayed, with marketing opt-ins as specified by the value of optIn. This is the default if no postConfirmationPage value is specified. |
| delivery | A postal address collection page is displayed, with marketing opt-ins as specified by the value of optIn. See Delivery Information Collection for details. | |
| none | The user is directed straight to the fulfilment URL; it is not possible to collect marketing opt-ins. optIn must be no; otherwise the request will be rejected. | |
| optIn | partner | The user is prompted to opt in to messages from both the merchant and third parties (default if no optIn value is specified). |
| yes | The user is prompted to opt in to messages from the merchant, but not third parties. | |
| no | No opt-ins are displayed. | |
| serviceDeliveryMessage | string, max 40 characters | Displays a custom service delivery message on the post-confirmation page if postConfirmationPage = confirmation The default message is "To access your purchase, productName, please click continue below." If optIn = no, the default message is: "Redirecting you to your purchase now" |
Examples
Suppose the end user is presented with the confirmation page below and selects "Pay Now".
The following examples illustrate the effect of different post-confirmation options.
While these examples show a one-off charge request, the same options apply when setting up a subscription.
Default post-confirmation page
- Post-confirmation page with default values: optIn = partner and postConfirmationPage = confirmation
- The text "To access your purchase ... click continue below" is shown by default. Alternative text can be supplied using the serviceDeliveryMessage parameter; this is useful if the item is not being delivered by direct download.
- The merchant opt-in checkbox is checked by default where permitted by the end user's operator (currently this applies to Vodafone and T-Mobile); otherwise it is unchecked by default.
- The partner opt-in checkbox is always unchecked by default.
Merchant opt-in only
If optIn is set to yes (rather than partner), only the merchant opt-in checkbox is shown:
No opt-ins
If optIn is set to no, no marketing opt-ins are shown:
- The end user is automatically redirected from this page after a short delay (if supported by the mobile handset.)
- The text "Redirecting you to your purchase now" is shown by default. Alternative text can be supplied using the serviceDeliveryMessage parameter.
No post-confirmation page
If postConfirmationPage is set to none, the user is directed away from the gateway-hosted WAP pages when the charge is confirmed and straight to the fulfilment URL.
For a one-off charge, an SMS receipt is sent out with the following wording:
Thank you. You have been charged £0.50 for Tiger Wallpaper 4 from Merchant. Help: 08456667778.
Delivery information collection
If postConfirmationPage is set to delivery, a delivery information collection page is displayed.
- Marketing opt-ins can still be specified by the optIn parameter.
- Alternative text cannot be supplied with serviceDeliveryMessage; the gateway will accept a serviceDeliveryMessage parameter, but it will not be displayed.
For a full guide, see the Delivery Information Collection documentation.
Regulatory considerations
Note that the official PayForIT rules set limits on how you can use any data collected about end users for marketing purposes.
See the official PayForIT Scheme Rules for details.
