3 opens up to Premium SMS
London - 6th January 2004
Hutchison 3G UK, often known more simply as "3", has finally opened up fully to premium SMS. The 3G operator has struck a deal with MX Telecom to allow them to be the sole aggregator with a direct SMSC (SMS centre) connection into their network. The move by the 3G network operator is good news for businesses in the mobile space, as it finally allows brands and content owners to run campaigns over all five UK networks, four of whom already had SMSC connections available to aggregators.
The exclusive deal means that MX Telecom's direct rivals in the aggregator space will have to put their clients' traffic through MX Telecom. While this is good for the company at the moment, it is unlikely to stay the same for long, as 3's subscriber base increases. 3 will also be under pressure from the other aggregator's to open up more connections into their SMSC.
However, all aggregators will be pleased that now businesses will be able to bill any UK user via SMS. Mark Fitzgerald, Managing Director of MX Telecom, commented, "Content owners and brands can launch immediately. 3 is today the fastest among all the UK operators at setting up a short code."
