Development Program Manager

Introduction

OpenMarket is a technology startup working in the mobile telecoms space. Over the past 5 years we have grown to 250 people spread across offices in London, Seattle Detroit, New York and Sydney. In short, we make it easy for companies to add mobile messaging payments, voice and video capabilities to their business and in doing so we send and receive billions of SMS and millions of MMS and micro payments annually.

Description of role

We are looking to hire a Development Program Manager to work with our London based SMS Gateway team.

The London SMS team is made up of 6 developers and a Development Program Manager. The team has responsibility for all aspects of technical delivery from design through to implementation and validation through to deployment and ongoing maintenance. The gateway handles billions of transactions a year and SMS is the main revenue source for the company. We are rightly proud of our up time record and consider reliability, maintainability and scalability to be our strengths.

Over the coming months we will be continuing to extend the gateway's functionality and coverage as well as scaling the system to cope with the explosive worldwide growth of the mobile market.

Responsibilities

  • Manage software engineering projects within the SMS team, working closely with external partners and Product Management to design and launch projects.
  • Line management for the team. Including: training, personal development, appraisals and performance reviews.
  • Manage timelines and expectations across the organisation.
  • Drive project delivery processes, tackling technical and people issues that arise, building consensus and challenging solutions.
  • Work with Product managers to define project requirements and schedule.

Skills and Experience

Must haves:

  • Experience in managing software development projects, either as a project manager, development manager or senior developer.
  • Proven track record of on-time, on-budget and fit for purpose project delivery.
  • Experience working in an iterative and incremental fashion, the team currently uses Kanban to manage its work flow and typically releases to production a few times a week.
  • Excellent communication skills, the role requires interaction with all sections of the company across multiple time zones.
  • Have worked as a Software Developer in the past.

Nice to haves:

  • A computer science degree from a top-class university.
  • Hands-on experience using a Kanban based work flow.
  • Comfortable with a linux shell and composing MySQL queries.
  • Experience of working with messaging platforms (in Telecoms or otherwise).
